Choosing Between Alleppey and Kumarakom
They are on the same lake and they are not the same trip.
Alleppey has the boats. Several hundred of them, and a jetty that in season resembles a car park. It also has the canals, the paddy below sea level, and the routes that no other part of the backwaters can offer.
Kumarakom has the lake, the bird sanctuary, and the serious Ayurvedic properties. It is quieter, more expensive, and better suited to staying put.
A useful rule: if you want to move, go to Alleppey. If you want to stop, go to Kumarakom. If you have a week, do both, in that order.
Whichever you choose, avoid a day boat. The Vembanad only becomes itself after the day traffic has gone in, which is around four in the afternoon.
