Karkidakam: Why Kerala Treats in the Rain
The monsoon month is the traditional season for treatment, and the reasoning is better than the marketing.
Karkidakam falls in July and August, at the height of the south-west monsoon. It is the month Malayali families have historically taken treatment, and it is also the month most visitors avoid.
The classical argument is about the body being more receptive: humidity opens the pores, the atmosphere is cool and still, and the digestive fire is considered weakest, which makes it the right time to reset rather than to exert.
The practical argument is quieter properties, physicians with more time, and rain that makes staying indoors for a fortnight feel like the obvious thing to do rather than a sacrifice.
It is not for everyone. If the point of the journey is the beach, come in December. If the point is the treatment, come in the rain.
